In this Al Najma vs Al Nassr match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.
With all due respect to Al Najma, this was one of those games where winning was not enough. It was about crushing. Bottom of the table, 46 goals conceded, a newly promoted side against an Al Nassr coming off 10 straight wins, 8 games without conceding and with the lead in sight after Al Hilal’s slip.
The context demanded a thrashing. And that’s what happened. Al Nassr started without anxiety, but with authority. In the 4th minute, a cross from Coman and Félix hits the top of the crossbar. In the same move, Ronaldo stays on the ground, VAR intervenes and the referee awards a penalty. In the 7th minute, Cristiano doesn’t miss. 965th goal of his career, 21st in the league, now two behind Ivan Toney in the scoring race. 0-1 and the feeling that it was going to be a long night for Najma.
And even without fully pressing the accelerator, the dominance was clear. Controlled possession, patient circulation, Mané constantly under double marking, because in 1v1 he is practically unstoppable in this context. Najma couldn’t even manage a shot.
The 0-2 comes from an intelligent play. Mané releases to Brozovic, Ronaldo realises he is in an offside position and has the awareness to step away from the move, almost “signalling” that he is not involved. Brozovic serves Coman inside the six-yard box and the Frenchman finishes with class. It’s a detail, but it shows the team’s mental state: confidence, awareness, composure.
Goalkeeper Vitor Braga’s injury in the 38th minute weakens Najma even more. And shortly after, in the 42nd minute, Inigo Martínez tries from distance. The shot isn’t perfect, there’s a deflection, but the new goalkeeper, Waled Al Enazi, looks very bad in the moment. The ball practically goes under him. There may be a touch off the defender, yes, but a goalkeeper at this level cannot concede there. 0-3 at half-time, with 1.84 xG against 0.00. Zero shots from Najma. Zero.
The second half was management with quality.
Cristiano still threatens, but in the 52nd minute decides to be generous. He receives in the box, could force the brace, but lays it off to Mané who places it into the top corner. 0-4. An important goal for the Senegalese, who feeds a lot off that emotional confidence.
Right after, Jorge Jesus starts rotating. Ronaldo, Félix and Mané come off. And the technical difference is immediately noticeable. It’s not criticism of the Saudis who come on, it’s observation: the refinement ends there. Al Nassr remain superior, of course, but lose some sparkle, lose precision in the final pass.
Even so, there was time to complete the five. In the 80th minute, a cross from Ghareeb and Inigo Martínez appears at the near post to apply a perfect glancing header. 0-5. Game settled, lead regained, pressure returned to the rivals.
Could it have been six? Yes. Seven? Maybe. But it was enough.
Post-match
Mission completed without wear, without scares and with the lead once again in their hands.
Al Nassr did what a title contender must do against the bottom side: resolve it early, control afterwards and manage energy. Cristiano closes in on Toney, the team maintain their winning streak and continue without conceding, and that, in such a tight race, can be decisive.
More than the result, the feeling is one of maturity. This team understands when it has to accelerate and when it can simply control.
