In this Athletic Club vs Barcelona match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.
San Mamés hosted an interesting match in the 27th round. In recent meetings, Barcelona had turned this fixture into an almost humiliating sequence for Athletic Club: clear wins, heavy scorelines and a feeling of obvious superiority. The context also mattered. Both teams arrived wounded from the Copa del Rey semi-finals. Athletic fell to Real Sociedad and Barcelona to Atlético, after almost completing an unlikely comeback.
The game nearly started with an unexpected scare. In the very first minute, a sliding clearance from João Cancelo on a low cross almost ended in an own goal, with the ball hitting Joan García’s crossbar. It was one of those strange moments that could have completely changed the start of the match.
Shortly after, Athletic appeared again with a cross toward Iñaki Williams, but the forward mistimed his jump and ended up touching the ball with his arm. It was a relatively active start from the Basques, but it quickly lost intensity.
From there the match settled into the rhythm Barcelona wanted: long possession, patience and territorial control. The problem is that control does not always mean danger. The team circulated the ball easily, but the attacking creativity was far from brilliant.
Lamine Yamal still tried to add unpredictability down the right, creating a good individual move that ended with a cross toward Ferran Torres. The problem was the finish. In fact, Ferran had a difficult first half: whenever the ball reached him, the move ended somewhat awkwardly.
Athletic, meanwhile, defended very deep and looked only for counter-attacks.
The second half brought important changes. Pedri came on and the game gained another level of fluency. Barcelona began to find spaces between the lines more effectively and the ball moved with greater intention. Even so, Athletic had dangerous moments. Sancet appeared twice in good positions inside the box, first after a pass from Navarro and then in a move built by Vivian. On both occasions, the finishing left much to be desired.
There was also a delicate disciplinary moment when Pau Cubarsí stopped Iñaki Williams during a run toward goal. The referee showed yellow, but it was one of those situations that easily falls into the category of an “orange yellow”.
In the 67th minute, Pedri carried the ball down the left and found Yamal inside the box. The youngster received it, calmly cut inside and curled a shot toward the far corner. A clean, technical strike, the kind that looks simple when it comes from the foot of a player with special talent.
With the disadvantage, Athletic were forced to come forward more. There was more possession for the Basques in the final minutes, but the attacking decisions continued to fall short.
Already in stoppage time, Navarro tried a first-time shot after a cross toward the left side of the box, and the ball passed relatively close to the post. It was Athletic’s last real breath.
Post-match
An important win for Barcelona, but far from a memorable performance. The team controlled almost the entire match with the ball, but for long stretches that possession produced very little. There was a lack of attacking intensity and creativity in the final third, something that only improved when Pedri came on and the starters began to appear.
Even in a match that was not particularly brilliant, Barça found a moment of quality that decided everything.
For Athletic, the feeling is one of a missed opportunity. The problem was finishing. Sancet had two good chances and Navarro also appeared in a dangerous position, but none of them were taken.
In the end, the recent pattern remains. Maybe without a heavy scoreline this time, but with the same final result: victory.
