Liverpool 4 – 0 Galatasaray | Analysis

Portuguese Portugal

In this Liverpool vs Galatasaray match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.

Anfield hosted a decisive night in the Champions League. Liverpool came in at a disadvantage after the 0-1 in Turkey, but with the clear feeling that they had more than enough to turn the tie around against Galatasaray, especially playing at home.

And from the start the plan was clear: intensity, high pressing and a high tempo. Galatasaray could barely play out from the back, suffocated by the English pressure. Even so, the opening minutes also showed some rush from Liverpool, with Salah wasting a good opportunity by not releasing the ball at the right moment.

Galatasaray defended with many players behind the ball, sometimes six almost in line, and tried to break the rhythm whenever possible, with constant falls and stoppages. It worked for a while, but it was hard to resist forever.

The goal that unlocked everything came in the 25th minute. From a well-worked corner, Mac Allister played a low pass to Szoboszlai, completely free at the edge of the box. The shot was powerful and placed, with no chance. A smart, simple and very effective move. 1-0 and everything level on aggregate.

Liverpool kept on top, but faced an inspired goalkeeper. Uğurcan Çakır kept his team in the game with several important saves, including one from a curled Salah shot.

Even before halftime, there was a moment that could have changed the tie. In stoppage time, Salah had the chance to put Liverpool ahead on aggregate, but attempted a chip from the penalty spot and allowed Çakır to save it.

In the 51st minute, Salah appeared again with a run in behind, this time more direct, and set up Ekitiké, who finished to make it 2-0. A simple move, but one that again exposed Galatasaray’s defensive fragility.

Two minutes later, another blow. Salah attacked the space again, the goalkeeper parried it forward and Gravenberch took advantage of the rebound to make it 3-0. From that point on, the game entered a phase of absolute dominance. Galatasaray completely lost their organization and Liverpool started to find spaces with huge ease.

In the 62nd minute, Salah capped the performance with a goal of great quality. Combination with Florian Wirtz, controlled touch and a curled shot into the corner. A clean technical action that shows the difference in level.

Until the end, the result could have been even heavier. Liverpool piled up chances, with Salah hitting the crossbar and Mac Allister forcing Çakır into another save. It was a second half without a story: one team playing and the other completely lost.

Post-match

The final result leaves no doubt: it was a clear and unquestionable comeback. Liverpool did not play a perfect game, especially in the first half where they missed a penalty and had moments of rush. The collective difference between the teams ended up showing naturally.
Szoboszlai was important in unlocking the game, Salah was involved in practically everything even with the penalty miss and the team responded well in a moment of pressure.
Galatasaray confirmed what was already known: away from home the team loses much of its strength. They defended with organization for some time, but when they conceded the second goal they completely collapsed.
