Real Madrid 3 – 2 Atlético Analysis

Portuguese Portugal

In this Real Madrid vs Atlético de Madrid match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.

At the Bernabéu, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid delivered exactly what you expect from a derby: intensity, chaotic moments and decisions that stay in the memory. It wasn’t a perfect game, but it was one you feel more than you analyze.

The start was electric, with both teams showing their intent. Madrid began better, more commanding with the ball, trying to push Atlético back. But on the other side, the plan was clear: recover and break quickly. And that almost paid off early as well.

As time went on, the game settled a bit, but never lost its tension. Madrid had more of the ball, more attacking presence, but lacked finishing. Atlético waited for the right moment, and found it in the 33rd minute. Quick counterattack, Lookman on the left, a simple and effective combination, and Lookman finished after a simple but brilliant backheel touch from Giuliano Simeone in a very well-worked move.

The second half brought a more aggressive Madrid and, above all, a more effective one. In the 52nd minute, the equalizer came through Vini Jr from the penalty spot, in a clear and well-awarded decision. And here the game changed. Madrid grew emotionally, pressed higher and, just minutes later, completed the comeback through Valverde, taking advantage of a major mistake in Atlético’s build-up. Two quick blows that completely shook Simeone’s team.

But this derby doesn’t allow for early conclusions. In the 67th minute, Nahuel Molina produced a stunning goal out of nowhere. One of those moments you can’t explain, it just happens. And when it felt like the game could go either way, Vini appeared again in the 71st minute with a curling shot to restore Madrid’s lead. A goal of pure talent, at a moment when Atlético were slightly on top.

And when the game called for composure, chaos arrived. Valverde’s red card in the 77th minute is, in my opinion, a clear mistake. A foul? Yes. A straight red? Never. And here comes an inevitable criticism: VAR cannot disappear in moments like this. In a game of this level, an error like that carries weight.

Until the end, Atlético tried. They pushed higher, took risks, created danger, but lacked precision. Madrid, even with ten men, knew how to suffer. And that is also quality.

Post-match

An important win for Real Madrid in a game they didn’t always control, but where they were more decisive. It shows character, even with mistakes.
Atlético once again shows it has the quality to compete, but not the consistency to manage games.
