Wolves 0 – 1 Tottenham | Analysis

Portuguese Portugal

In this Wolves vs Tottenham match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.

There are matches that aren’t about playing well. They’re about surviving and for Tottenham, this was exactly that: a matter of life or death in a season that entered disaster territory a long time ago.

The first half says everything about the team’s current moment. Much more of the ball, much more presence in the attacking half and practically zero real danger. Sterile possession, slow circulation, very few players attacking the box. It’s that kind of dominance that scares no one.

Wolves, already relegated, play without pressure and it shows. They don’t do much, but they don’t suffer either. They defend deep, compact and wait for the mistake. Tottenham keep making some, like that completely unnecessary pass from Danso that almost gifts a clear chance. This isn’t just form, it’s a lack of quality in basic moments.

Even when there is space, there’s no decision-making. There’s no one taking responsibility and that’s worrying when you’re in a fight like this. Solanke’s injury still in the first half only reinforces that sense of chaos. Another forced change, another break in what little organisation there was. And at the end of the first 45 minutes, the summary is simple: a poor, slow game with no urgency. And that is unforgivable for a team that desperately needs to win.

The second half starts differently. More open, more chaotic, more emotional. Wolves come out better, more aggressive and Tottenham begin to lose the control they had, even if it was an empty kind of control.

And then comes another blow: Xavi Simons’ injury. Another one. The team starts to fall apart, not just tactically, but emotionally as well. The match completely breaks. There is no structure anymore, just moments. And in that chaos, Wolves actually look more comfortable. They take advantage of mistakes, win duels and start to believe.

But in the 82nd minute, in a match where almost nothing made sense, the decisive moment appears. Corner, the ball is loose in the box, Richarlison tries to finish but it comes out weak, awkward and that’s where Palhinha appears. He stretches, gets a touch and pushes it in. It’s not pretty, it’s not clean, but it’s everything Tottenham needed. 0-1.

And from there, everything changes. Not in quality, but in attitude. Tottenham drop back, close up, fight for every ball. Wolves respond with pressure and persistence. Tottenham hold on however they can: with clearances, with fouls, with pure suffering.

And in the last moment, in the 90+9 minute, almost punishment. Dangerous free-kick, well struck and Kinsky produces an absurd save. The kind that wins points. The kind that can define a season.

And in the end, there’s no spectacle, no dominance, no brilliance. There’s survival.

Post-match

A massive win for Tottenham, but not enough in the immediate sense. West Ham also won and that keeps everything the same. The fight goes on, and Tottenham remain behind.
But today, at least, they stayed alive.
