The United States entered the World Cup with everything that was expected of them: intensity, responsibility and the clear understanding that, at home, there is very little room for mistakes. On the other side was a Paraguay team that had earned its place here on merit, but quickly showed its limitations against a side that looked better prepared and possessed greater quality.
The game practically began with a statement. In the 7th minute, a quick counter-attack down the left saw Pulisic burst forward with quality, glide past a defender with ease and release McKennie. The midfielder delivered the ball into the box and, while attempting to clear, Damián Bobadilla diverted it into his own net. A moment that perfectly summed up the opening stages: American aggression and Paraguayan nerves.
From that point on, things became increasingly difficult for the South Americans. The team had not been pressing particularly high to begin with and, after falling behind, still struggled to push forward with any quality. The United States, meanwhile, controlled possession without rushing, yet always looked dangerous, especially through the wide areas where Pulisic and Dest consistently caused problems.
There was an early warning when Balogun had a goal ruled out, after Pulisic was caught offside before providing the assist. However, the second goal arrived shortly afterwards. Robinson released Pulisic down the left, the winger drove forward into space and, once inside the box, practically handed Balogun a goal on a plate. The striker simply had to tap it in. 2-0.
The domination was complete and Paraguay had no response. Without pressure, without possession and without ideas, they were reduced to trying to close spaces, but even that proved difficult. Then came the defining moment of the match. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Tillman found Balogun’s run. The striker held up the ball, faced Gustavo Gómez, cut inside with class and unleashed a shot into the top corner. A brilliant individual goal that effectively killed the contest before halftime.
The second half brought a slightly more adventurous Paraguay, but never one capable of creating consistent danger. Even so, they managed to pull one back in the 73rd minute through a direct move. A long kick from the goalkeeper, a physical duel won up front, Enciso holding the ball with his back to goal before releasing Maurício on the left, who finished efficiently. It was a simple goal, but one that came from what Paraguay did best throughout the match: direct football.
Even then, there was never a real feeling that a comeback was possible. The United States always looked more likely to score again than to concede. They managed the game well, created occasional opportunities and maintained complete emotional control.
The final touch arrived deep into stoppage time, in the 98th minute, and it was a moment of pure quality. A neat exchange of passes around the edge of the box found Giovanni Reyna in space. With time to think, he chose a trivela finish, bending the ball beautifully into the back of the net. 4-1.
By the final whistle, the gap between the two teams had been clear. The United States delivered a serious, professional performance and were dominant for long stretches. Paraguay never truly found a way into the game.

The United States confirmed their status as favourites with a composed display and several moments of outstanding individual quality.
Paraguay, meanwhile, left a poor impression, lacking both aggression and the ability to compete at this level for a full ninety minutes.
