It was one of those games that, on paper, seemed to have only one possible direction. Argentina with the ball, Cape Verde defending deep and trying to survive. And for a long time, that was exactly how it played out. But football has a curious way of making simple things complicated.
Argentina started in control, but without much intensity. They dominated possession and spent plenty of time in the attacking half, but there was a lack of urgency. Cape Verde defended with everything they had, staying compact, leaving very little space, and waiting for a mistake or a moment to exploit.
Messi was the only player consistently trying to speed things up. He searched for space, took shots whenever he could, but rarely under ideal conditions. At the other end, Vozinha was putting on a show, even with the ball at his feet, displaying remarkable confidence.
The breakthrough came in the 29th minute and was born from a moment of pure quality. Lisandro Martínez spotted Messi’s run and delivered a perfect ball in behind the defence. Messi brought it down beautifully and smashed his finish into the roof of the net. A simple finish, but one that required exceptional vision and timing.
Even with the lead, Argentina did not change much. They continued to control possession, but without killing the game. And that kept Cape Verde alive.
Everything changed in the second half. Cape Verde came out stronger, more confident and more adventurous. And they were rewarded for it.
In the 59th minute, a move down the right saw Ryan Mendes find Deroy Duarte in a position with very little angle to work with. Even so, he made the right decision, struck the ball brilliantly and beat Dibu Martínez. A historic goal, not only because of the moment, but because of the belief the team showed.
From then on, the game became completely different. Argentina felt the impact, began to increase the tempo, but also became more desperate. Messi tried to take matters into his own hands, had a one-on-one opportunity and several dangerous free-kicks, but Vozinha was always there. An outstanding performance.
Cape Verde, meanwhile, were no longer simply defending. They genuinely started to believe. They still had their limitations, of course, but they played with much more courage.
The match went to extra time, and there was another twist almost immediately.
In the 92nd minute, Argentina won a corner. The ball was flicked on at the near post and Lisandro Martínez reacted quickest, keeping it in play before smashing it into the net. A goal born from persistence and belief right until the final second of the move.
But just when it seemed that would decide everything, Cape Verde produced an incredible response. In the 103rd minute, Sidny Lopes Cabral received the ball on the left, cut inside and curled a stunning effort into the top corner. One of those goals that cannot really be explained, only admired. The moment of the match.
And when everything seemed destined for penalties, the cruellest moment arrived. In the 111th minute, Messi delivered a corner, Romero won the aerial duel, and the ball deflected off Diney. An unfortunate touch, off his hand, completely changed the direction of the ball and wrong-footed the goalkeeper. An own goal that decided everything in a true anti-climax.
Until the final whistle, Cape Verde kept pushing, kept believing and even forced Dibu Martínez into action, but they could not find another equaliser.
It was a far more difficult game than Argentina expected, and a historic one for Cape Verde.
Post-match
Argentina move on, but with plenty of warning signs. Once again, they struggled to control the emotional side of the game and came close to paying a heavy price.
Cape Verde, meanwhile, leave with their heads held high. They competed brilliantly, scored twice, pushed one of the world’s biggest national teams to the limit, and leave behind an incredible image of themselves.
