António Silva, the 22-year-old centre-back, has decided not to renew his contract with Benfica and is very close to joining Bournemouth. Let’s assume the move is happening and talk about it, because there is plenty to discuss.
António Silva was one of the most highly rated young centre-backs of recent years, but his stock gradually declined until it reached its lowest point. During the 2025/26 season, he lost his place in the starting lineup, and there was barely any debate about it. The preferred partnership was Otamendi and Tomás Araújo and, honestly, there was no real discussion. It was a clear decision by Mourinho.
At the 2026 World Cup, it was Araújo who received the call-up, not Silva. Once again, there was no real surprise. The only question was whether Roberto Martínez would have the courage to leave him out, and he did.
Even so, António Silva always showed respect for Benfica until the very end. Now, his destination appears to be Bournemouth.
The obvious question is: is this another Benfica scam? We have seen several before. The transfer fee will be relatively low because of his contract situation, which reduces the risk while preserving the potential upside. Because one thing is clear: he is not an average defender. He is a good centre-back who is simply going through a very difficult period. He needed a change of scenery.
The challenge is that he is moving to the Premier League, where the level is much higher. The demands will be greater, and there is no guarantee that he will arrive and immediately become a starter. But the quality is still there.
Conclusion
Bournemouth are taking a low-risk gamble on António Silva, but it will require serious work to help him rediscover his best form. I am not sure he will become an immediate starter, and I am not sure he will return to the level he once showed.
Right now, his future is far more uncertain than many people believe. He is not the same António Silva, at least not yet.
