Real Madrid 4 – 1 Real Sociedad | Analysis

Portuguese Portugal

The match carried both table pressure and emotional weight. Real Madrid came in pushed by the chase of Barcelona and knew that winning meant, even if temporarily, jumping to the top. It was not just about winning, it was about putting psychological pressure on their direct rival. And the start was almost perfect.

Without Mbappé in the starting XI, the attacking duo of Vinícius Júnior and Gonzalo García brought mobility and unpredictability. Early on, the young striker takes advantage of a pinpoint cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold and opens the scoring with composure, one of those pure striker goals, more about timing than power.

The game did not close down there. Real Sociedad responded well, showed personality and equalised from the penalty spot through Mikel Oyarzabal. For a few minutes there was a sense of an open game, with quick transitions and space on both sides.

But that was when Madrid really accelerated. Vinícius starts dismantling the opponent’s right defensive side, wins a penalty and makes it 2-1. Shortly after comes the technical moment of the first half: Federico Valverde receives at the edge of the box, adjusts without pressure and curls a placed shot that practically killed the emotional stability of the match even before half-time.

More than the lead, what stood out was comfort. Madrid defended in a 4-4-2 without the ball, but when they recovered it was always vertical: long passes, attacking space, exactly the kind of game that maximises Vini Jr.

The second half starts and the story repeats itself: Vinícius wins another penalty and scores again. 4-1 and the game is settled early.

From there on, it was management. Sociedad had more of the ball, which is natural when you are losing by three, but kept running into two factors: little defensive aggression when they needed to recover, and little efficiency when they arrived.

Thibaut Courtois was still called into action twice in important moments, preventing the scoreline from tightening and giving the game any extra narrative, but overall Madrid controlled things without truly suffering.

Post-game

A clear win, heavy on the scoreboard and important in the league context. Real Madrid achieve their main objective: they win, pressure Barcelona and place responsibility on the rival side.
Obvious standouts for Vini Jr, absolutely unstoppable, two penalties won and two converted, and for Valverde, who once again showed the impact he has when he appears in finishing zones. Gonzalo García also showed very positive signs.
On Real Sociedad’s side there was courage on the ball, but too many defensive fragilities to contest the result. Conceding four in Madrid can happen, but the way they conceded, with so much space and so many individual errors, weighs heavily.
In the end, a match that looked balanced before kick-off, but on the pitch was decided by efficiency, depth and a Vinícius in nightmare mode for any defence.
