Real Madrid 3 – 0 Man City | Analysis

Portuguese Portugal

In this Real Madrid vs Man City match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.

Santiago Bernabéu hosted the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 with a scenario that, on paper, seemed favorable to Manchester City. Real Madrid reached this stage with a season full of doubts: many injuries, unconvincing performances, and several wins earned more through individual quality than collective dominance. Meanwhile, City was going through a phase of enormous consistency, accumulating weeks without defeat and generally playing more stable football.

The opening minutes seemed to confirm this expectation. Jérémy Doku immediately caused problems in one-on-one situations and, in one of the first moves, entered the box and crossed dangerously, but no one appeared to finish. Shortly after, Madrid responded: Vini Jr found Brahim Díaz with a pass over the defense, and the shot forced Donnarumma to intervene.

City then started to have more possession, trying to implement their usual game of circulation and patience. Erling Haaland dropped deep to participate in the build-up, while Madrid relied on surprisingly organized pressing. It wasn’t constant pressure, but it was enough to disrupt them.

And in the 20th minute came the first blow. Courtois launched long to the right, Valverde attacked the space, won the duel with Donnarumma, and after getting past the goalkeeper with a quick touch, finished to make it 1-0. A fast, almost unexpected play, but executed with great elegance.

City tried to react with more possession, but they never seemed truly comfortable. Madrid defended the interior zones well, and whenever Doku received the ball, two or three white shirts immediately closed down the space.

In the 27th minute came the second goal. Vinícius drove down the left, attracted the marking, and tried to pass through the middle. The ball deflected off a defender and landed at Valverde’s feet inside the area. The Uruguayan did not hesitate and finished first-time to make it 2-0.

From then on, the game entered a curious moment. City had more possession, but emotionally, Madrid seemed more comfortable. And before halftime came the moment that practically defined the night. In the 42nd minute, Brahim launched Valverde behind the defense; the Uruguayan controlled it with class, took the opponent out of the way with a lift over him, and finished to complete the hat-trick. One of those moments when the Bernabéu realizes it is witnessing something special.

In the second half, the scenario was predictable: City with the ball, Madrid ready to run.

Even so, Madrid still had a chance to extend the lead. In the 57th minute, Vinícius sprinted in behind and won a penalty after Donnarumma came out late. The Brazilian himself took it, but the Italian goalkeeper redeemed himself with a good save.

The rest of the game was almost a portrait of the night. City continued with more possession but without much capacity to break down Madrid’s defensive organization. When danger appeared, there was Courtois to respond, including an impressive save near the end after a nearly amateurish mistake by Thiago.

Post-match

The result is surprising, especially given the context in which Real Madrid arrived for this match. For weeks, people talked about an irregular team, dependent on individual moments, and struggling to dominate matches. Madrid was extremely efficient. Every transition seemed dangerous, and Valverde had an absolutely memorable night.
For Man City, the problem was the lack of real aggressiveness. There was possession, there was circulation, but there was rarely a sense of true danger.
The 3-0 does not mathematically decide the tie, but it completely changes the narrative. City still has the quality to react, but now they need to seek something very special.
