· 2 min readIn this Real Betis vs Lyon match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.
A pre-season friendly, but one that felt like a competitive match. Real Betis and Lyon, both coming off strong seasons, arrived looking to test themselves rather than prove anything, but nobody enjoys losing by four goals. And in the end, the scoreline said far more than anyone expected.
The opening stages actually belonged to Lyon. They pressed high, looked to disrupt Betis’ build-up and created the first real chance when Deossa struck from distance, catching Greif slightly off guard, although the goalkeeper dealt with it well. Soon afterwards, another high turnover saw Maitland-Niles slip the ball through to Boudache, who fired over the bar from close range. It was a good opportunity and probably Lyon’s best spell of the match.
Football does not always reward momentum, though. Just as Lyon looked more comfortable, Betis made the most of a set-piece. In the 23rd minute, a short corner led to a perfectly delivered cross, and Bartra rose highest inside the six-yard box to head home. Simple, direct and clinical. 1-0, despite Lyon enjoying more possession at the time.
From there, the game changed completely. Lyon continued to dominate the ball, but it was sterile possession, moving sideways with very little penetration. Their crosses lacked quality and their decision-making became increasingly rushed. Tolisso, who could have added control and authority in midfield, struggled to influence the game. Betis, meanwhile, never needed to dominate possession to stay in complete control.
Just before half-time came another blow. In the 44th minute, another Fornals corner found Deossa, who climbed highest to power a header towards goal. The ball bounced awkwardly, deceived the goalkeeper and even clipped the post before going in. 2-0, with Fornals providing his second assist from almost identical deliveries. Maximum efficiency.
The pattern remained the same after the break. Lyon still enjoyed more possession, but had no real ideas. They lacked creativity, aggression and quality in the final third. Betis sensed that, began exploiting the spaces more frequently and looked increasingly dangerous on the counter-attack.
In the 58th minute, the match was effectively over. Lyon won a corner, Betis cleared it and immediately broke forward. Fornals carried the ball down the right before delivering a cross. The goalkeeper made the initial save, but Maitland-Niles attempted to clear the rebound and only succeeded in putting it straight into the path of Pablo García, who simply tapped into an empty net. A clear mistake, punished instantly. 3-0.
From that point onwards, it felt as though Betis could score every time they attacked. Lyon continued to dominate possession but never looked threatening. There was no clear move, no sustained spell of pressure. They simply looked like a team without answers.
The fourth goal arrived in the 79th minute and almost summed up the afternoon. The ball was worked out to the left, Riquelme received it with plenty of space, looked up and drilled a low effort across goal with very little opposition. Everything came too easily. 4-0.
Lyon still pushed forward until the final whistle, but by then it was without any real belief. And perhaps that was the most worrying aspect of all.
Post-match
A heavy defeat, even if it was only a friendly. Betis were pragmatic, outstanding from set-pieces and extremely comfortable punishing mistakes. Fornals stood out with his two assists and his excellent reading of the game. Lyon, on the other hand, enjoyed plenty of possession but produced almost no attacking threat. There is a great deal to improve, especially in the way they turn possession into genuine chances.
