A Premier League begins with the defending champions sending an immediate warning. Arsenal opened the new season against Coventry, the Championship champions, and it was clear from the start that there was a huge gap between the two teams. Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, tried to survive, but almost never managed to turn possession or promising positions into any real danger.
Arsenal started piling on the pressure and also got some help from their opponents. In the 15th minute, Milan van Ewijk failed to clear the ball, ended up hitting Calafiori and the full-back accepted the gift: a low cross found Havertz, who finished to make it 1-0. The second goal also came from a mistake. Rice won the ball near the halfway line, carried it forward and left it for Tzolis, who fired a low shot; Rushworth got a touch to it, but left the ball at Saka’s feet, who only had to tap it in. 2-0.
Tzolis was one of Arsenal’s standout players, constantly causing problems down the left and involved, in one way or another, in both of the first two goals. Ødegaard also looked more daring, taking more risks, which is exactly what you want from him. On the other side, Simms still tried to battle Gabriel, but it was a difficult fight. Coventry finished the first half with just two shots, both from outside the box, while Arsenal had 67% possession and 1.29 xG.
The truth is that Arsenal’s dominance wasn’t just about the goals. In the first half, they had 10 shots compared to Coventry’s two, with Lampard’s side failing to hit the target and rarely managing to play through the pressure. Even Tchaouna’s acrobatic attempt near the edge of the box was more surprising than dangerous. Simms managed to get Gabriel booked and had a few physical battles, but there wasn’t much else to offer.
In the second half, the hunger faded a little, but there was no need to keep pushing with the same intensity.
And right at the start of the second half came the third. Ødegaard played the ball out to the right, received it back after the low cross and took a poor shot, but completely fooled Rushworth, who had already dived. 3-0 and the game was practically over.
After that, Arsenal naturally lowered the intensity. Coventry had more of the ball at times, but still looked a long way from scoring. Another defensive mistake led to a Lewis-Skelly shot and, only in the 86th minute, Coventry finally created a real opportunity: Jack Rudoni found space, but his shot was weak and Raya saved comfortably.
Post-match
Arsenal started exactly as they wanted: a win, three goals and a feeling of almost complete control. It wasn’t a perfect performance, and it didn’t need to be. Coventry showed why adapting to the Premier League will be difficult, while Arsenal made it clear that they are still entering the league as the team to beat.
