· 2 min readIn this Galatasaray vs Fenerbahçe match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.
The Kıtalararası Derbi, or Intercontinental Derby, is the greatest rivalry Turkish football has to offer the world. Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe divide Istanbul between two continents, and with just three points separating them in the table, there was plenty at stake.
After mixed results in Europe, the two teams came into the game with different strengths, but one thing was guaranteed: there would be no shortage of fire, on or off the pitch.
It took just 20 seconds for a full-blown scuffle to break out between Lukaku and Bardakcı. The atmosphere was set, and the yellow cards started coming out early. On the pitch, however, only one team seemed ready to play. Galatasaray dominated possession, pressed high and found it easy to reach the opposition’s box.
In the 15th minute, Yılmaz exploited the space between centre-back and full-back, drove into the box from the left and forced Ederson into a save. Two minutes later, he tested the goalkeeper again, this time with a shot that was far too weak.
Fenerbahçe couldn’t even play their way out from the back. In the 25th minute, Kanté did manage to find Lukaku in the box, but Sánchez cut out the ball and nearly scored an own goal, hitting the post. That warning did nothing to prevent what came next. In the 28th minute, Brown practically gifted possession to the opposition with a disastrous lofted pass. Yılmaz took advantage, set up Osimhen and the striker fired with tremendous power to make it 1-0. It was thoroughly deserved.
Galatasaray continued to dominate. Osimhen tried a backheel after a cross from Jakobs, but sent the ball over the bar. In the 38th minute, the striker threatened again, forcing a superb save from Ederson. The Brazilian goalkeeper was preventing an even heavier defeat, but he couldn’t stop the second goal.
In the 44th minute, Sánchez shot from outside the box and Osimhen made a slight touch with his head, changing the ball’s trajectory and directing it inside the post. A moment of outstanding quality, worthy of a striker of his calibre.
At half-time, the numbers were embarrassing for Fenerbahçe: 11 shots for Galatasaray against none, 68% possession and four saves from Ederson. The gap between the teams was enormous.
In the second half, Fenerbahçe finally managed a shot, but still couldn’t build any sustained attacks. In the 62nd minute, however, a moment of pure individual quality changed the game. Kerem Aktürkoğlu crossed, Oğuz Aydın laid the ball off, and İrfan Kahveci produced a magnificent overhead kick. Çakır got a touch, but couldn’t keep it out. Suddenly, the 2-1 scoreline gave some hope to a team that had been completely dominated up to that point.
Galatasaray responded by bringing on Rafael Leão, another reminder of the talent available in their squad. The Portuguese came close to scoring with a long-range effort and threatened again on a counter-attack led by Sané.
Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, remained predictable and slow despite desperately searching for an equaliser. They only created real danger in stoppage time, when Škriniar’s header was blocked on the goal line.
Sané still forced an extraordinary save from Ederson, but the scoreline remained unchanged. Galatasaray deservedly won. Fenerbahçe managed just two shots for almost the entire game and spent far too long unable to compete.
Post-match
Kahveci’s superb goal added drama to the derby, but it couldn’t disguise a very poor team performance.
