In this Barcelona vs Real Madrid match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.
There are clásicos that feel like war and then there are classicos that seem decided before they even begin. This was one of those. And not only because of the result, but because of the attitude.
The opening is almost strange. Low tempo, little pressure, especially from Real Madrid. A passive 4-4-2, compact lines, but without aggression. And against a comfortable Barcelona side, that is already halfway towards conceding.
In the 9th minute comes the first real moment. A wide free-kick, the kind of position usually suited for a left-footer, but Rashford takes responsibility. Right foot, the ball bending away, perfect trajectory and it flies straight into the far top corner. A brilliant goal. 1–0. And the most worrying thing for Real Madrid is not the goal itself. It is the reaction, or the lack of one.
Barcelona stay calm, moving the ball around, controlling the match. Madrid do have a few moments through Brahim Díaz, who keeps trying with carries and dribbles, but it is all isolated, with no continuity. Then, in the 18th minute, the second blow. A cross into the box, Olmo anticipates with a backheel touch, gets ahead of Rüdiger and the ball falls to Ferran. Free, under little pressure, he controls with time and finishes with composure. 2–0. A goal that exposes everything: lack of aggression, lack of focus, lack of reaction.
Barcelona do not even need to force things. They have the result, they have control, they have an opponent completely disconnected. And the most impressive thing is exactly that: Real Madrid never accelerate. No high press, no risk-taking, no urgency. They have the ball in some moments, but always at a slow, predictable rhythm.
Barcelona could even have made it three before half-time. Ferran sends Rashford through in behind, he wins the race and shoots, but Courtois produces a great save. And even then, the feeling remains the same: the game already feels over.
In the second half, there is a slight attempt at a response. Madrid push a little higher, try to show a different face. In the 63rd minute, Bellingham does put the ball in the net, but he is offside. A moment that creates a bit of illusion, but nothing more than that, because on the other side, Barcelona remain comfortable. They manage, circulate, wear Madrid down. And whenever they accelerate, they create danger again. In the 56th minute, Cancelo finds Ferran in behind the defence, he shoots across goal and Courtois once again saves Madrid.
In fact, if there is one player keeping the scoreline remotely respectable, it is Courtois. Time passes and the game loses intensity. Barcelona keep the ball, the stadium settles into the rhythm, the olés begin, the chants of champions begin and that says everything, because a clásico like this should have tension, should have emotion, but there was very little of either.
Real Madrid do try a little more in the final stages, with moments like Trent playing Palacios through, but the shot goes completely wide. The perfect summary. An attempt without quality.
And in the end, there are no doubts.
Post-match
Barcelona are champions and fully deserve it. More than just winning, they took advantage of the perfect moment and a rival that looked completely lost.
