· 2 min readIn this Brazil vs Norway match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.
It was a game that promised balance within imbalance. Brazil had more collective quality and more options, but Norway had one very clear weapon: Haaland and the space behind the defence. And for a long time, the match unfolded exactly along that line of tension.
Brazil actually had less possession, playing more directly, looking to capitalise on mistakes and create dangerous situations. Early on, a VAR review awarded them a penalty after a foul on Matheus Cunha. It was the perfect opportunity to take control of the game, but in the 14th minute Bruno Guimarães saw his spot-kick saved by Nyland. And that was where the story began to take shape.
Norway enjoyed more of the ball, something that was not necessarily expected, and Brazil were happy to accept that. They dropped deeper, became more reactive and waited for mistakes before breaking quickly. And at times, it worked well.
Martinelli looked dangerous down the left, Vini Jr kept creating one-on-one situations, but Nyland was always there. He dealt confidently with everything that came his way, producing several excellent saves. That kept the game wide open.
At the other end, Haaland was more controlled than influential. He had very little space and rarely received the ball in dangerous positions, but he was always lurking, always causing problems. He only needed one moment.
Just before half-time, there was a serious warning. A long ball found Haaland, who used his strength to win the duel before laying it off to Ødegaard. He arrived in the box and forced Alisson into a fine save. It was exactly the kind of move that highlighted the danger Norway posed.
Norway started the second half looking more comfortable. They continued to dominate possession and stayed well organised, while Brazil searched for solutions. But they increasingly lacked composure. Endrick had a golden opportunity shortly after coming on, finding himself clean through on goal, but made the wrong decision and failed to hit the target.
The game slowly drifted towards the point where it felt as though only one moment would decide it. And when you have a player like Haaland, that moment can arrive at any time.
In the 80th minute, a cross was delivered into the box and Haaland did what he does best. He outmuscled Gabriel, rose highest and powered a header into the back of the net. A simple goal in its concept, but almost impossible to stop when he attacks the ball like that.
Brazil felt the blow, pushed forward in search of an equaliser and left even more space behind. That proved fatal.
In the 90th minute, Haaland received the ball outside the box with far too much room. He looked up and curled a precise finish into the corner. A clean strike that gave Alisson no chance. The almost effortless way he finished said everything about his quality.
The game looked over, but there was still time for one final moment. Deep into stoppage time, Brazil were awarded a penalty, and Neymar, in his final match, stepped up. In the 90+9th minute, he calmly converted to pull one back. It was a goal that carried far more emotion than importance. 1-2.
Post-match
Norway executed exactly the game they wanted and were ruthlessly efficient. Haaland made the difference in the way great players do.
Brazil, meanwhile, will be left to reflect on their lack of clinical finishing and their inability to impose themselves on the game. There was also the symbolic weight of Neymar’s final appearance, bringing an era to a close.
