There was some respect for Coritiba’s recent form, but it quickly became clear that this was one of those matches where the league leaders simply impose themselves. Palmeiras did not need to be spectacular. They just had to be clinical and know exactly when to step up a gear.
The opening stages were fairly even, with Coritiba trying to stay compact and avoid leaving too much space. But that only lasted a few minutes. Palmeiras soon began finding gaps through the middle, linking up far better and working their way into dangerous areas with real composure.
In the 8th minute, their first genuine opportunity immediately became a goal. It was a patient move involving several players before Sosa received the ball between the lines, shielded it brilliantly and released Maurício at exactly the right moment. His finish was clean, precise and beyond the goalkeeper. A goal built on intelligent possession and clever movement in tight spaces. 0-1.
Coritiba tried to respond and even threatened from a Josué free-kick that forced Carlos Miguel into an excellent save, but there was a clear difference in how the two sides approached the final third. Palmeiras always looked more comfortable.
That was obvious again in the 19th minute. Coritiba lost possession high up the pitch, Palmeiras broke quickly, and Sosa drove forward down the right. The move looked to have broken down when his shot was blocked, but the rebound fell kindly to Maurício. Already on the move, he attacked the space and finished calmly. 0-2. Simple, direct and ruthlessly effective.
The match was virtually decided at that point. Palmeiras dictated the tempo, alternating between patient possession and quick transitions, and always looked capable of scoring again. Even so, it was not a relentless domination. Coritiba had their moments, forced Carlos Miguel into another save and threatened from set-pieces.
But something was always missing in the final third. Whether it was the decision-making, the quality, or simply the inability to break down a defence that rarely lost its shape.
The second half changed slightly, but only in terms of possession. Coritiba saw more of the ball, pushed higher up the pitch and filled the box with crosses, but without much quality. There was plenty of volume, but very little real danger.
Palmeiras, comfortable with their lead, slowed the tempo and waited. And when you defend patiently, space eventually appears.
In the 67th minute came another moment of individual quality. The ball was switched from right to left, Sosa collected it outside the box, looked up and realised nobody was closing him down. He cut inside and struck a low effort into the far corner. A superb finish, the kind that completely kills off any hopes of a comeback. 0-3.
Almost immediately afterwards, Coritiba managed to pull one back. In the 68th minute, a cross into the area caused confusion before Paulo Roberto reacted quickest to finish from close range. It was a goal born more from persistence than from a well-worked move. 1-3.
Even then, there was never a genuine feeling that a comeback was on the cards. Palmeiras saw the game out comfortably, without rushing or taking unnecessary risks, like a team that knew exactly what it was doing.
Post-match
Another convincing Palmeiras victory. They do not always entertain, and they do not always dominate, but they are remarkably efficient. Sosa was directly involved in everything important going forward, while Maurício settled the contest early on.
Coritiba showed commitment and kept trying, but simply lacked the quality to trouble Palmeiras in any meaningful way.
