It was one of those games where the favourites exist on paper, but still have to prove it on the pitch. And Germany, once again in this tournament, showed that it is not as straightforward as that. They had the ball, they controlled the territory, but once again they lacked what really wins games: the ability to create danger.
Paraguay did exactly what everyone expected. A deep block, compact lines, a very disciplined 4-4-2 and a clear willingness to suffer. They did not want to play, they wanted to survive. And for a long time, they managed it with surprising comfort.
Germany moved the ball around, exchanged passes and tried to find spaces, but everything was too predictable. They lacked acceleration, they lacked players making runs, they lacked someone willing to take responsibility. And when that happens, defending becomes much easier.
The most interesting thing was that, despite doing very little with the ball, Paraguay managed to keep the game balanced. They did not create much, but they did not allow much either. And in a game like this, one moment can change everything.
That moment came in the 41st minute. Germany won a corner, the ball was cleared, but Paraguay regained possession and broke quickly from the second phase. Galarza received the ball on the right, looked up and delivered an excellent cross. Enciso arrived unmarked in the box, with very little pressure, and headed accurately into the back of the net. A simple goal, but one that made the most of the opportunity.
The impact was immediate. Paraguay grew even more confident, dropped even deeper and started playing the clock. Germany, meanwhile, slipped into that familiar state of anxiety, trying to find a quick solution without really knowing how.
The German response came relatively early in the second half. In the 54th minute, Wirtz received the ball on the left, created some space and whipped a dangerous cross into the box. Havertz, with his back to goal, produced a subtle flick almost without any preparation, and the ball found the corner. A touch of quality from a move that did not seem to offer much.
The equaliser changed the situation, but not the game completely. Germany improved, pressed higher and pushed Paraguay further back, but they continued to make poor decisions. Blocked shots, too many crosses, plenty of persistence, but very little clarity.
Paraguay, meanwhile, were happy with that role. They defended, cleared their lines and tried to survive. And whenever they broke forward, they did so outnumbered, with very little chance of creating danger.
As time went on, the game became almost a German siege. Cross after cross, set pieces, second balls, but always with the feeling that something was missing in the final touch.
The pattern continued in extra time. Germany attacked, Paraguay resisted. There was even a moment when Tah headed into the net completely unmarked at the far post, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper. A debatable decision, but one that kept the scores level.
The game eventually went exactly where Paraguay had always wanted it to go: penalties. At that point, tactics no longer matter. Only nerve.
Germany missed more than they could afford to. Havertz saw his penalty saved, Woltemade also failed to convert, and Tah, at a crucial stage, sent his effort wide. Paraguay missed as well, but fewer times. Canale converted his penalty, and the story was complete.
Post-match
A painful elimination for Germany, more because of the way they played than the result itself. Plenty of possession, very little imagination, and constant pressure without any real purpose.
Paraguay executed exactly the game plan they wanted: suffer, survive and take it to penalties. Once there, they were more clinical. It was not pretty, but that is knockout football.
