PSG 1 (4) – (3) 1 Arsenal | Analysis

Portuguese Portugal

In this PSG vs Arsenal match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.

Champions League final, two very clear ideas facing each other. PSG with the ball, with fluidity, trying to push the game into a higher tempo. Arsenal comfortable without the ball, compact, waiting for the mistake. And the game started exactly as Arsenal wanted.

As early as the 5th minute, the first big moment arrived. Marquinhos tries to clear, but hits Trossard and the ball falls to Havertz. And here the German deserves all the credit: he drives into space, enters the box, ignores the passing lane to Saka and decides to go himself. Powerful shot, high into the near top corner. A great goal, but one that comes from a completely chaotic situation. 0-1.

And with that came the perfect scenario for Arsenal. Low block, compact lines, controlling the game without the ball. PSG took responsibility for everything: possession, territory and initiative. But one thing is having the ball, another is knowing what to do with it.

Throughout the entire first half, PSG had control, but almost never had danger. Plenty of passing, plenty of circulation, but always in front of a wall. Gabriel Magalhães was immense, always perfectly positioned, cutting out everything that came his way. Arsenal did not want to play, they wanted to survive. And they were doing it. At the other end, they barely existed offensively. Whenever they recovered possession, they lost it quickly. They could not escape PSG’s pressure. But they did not really need much more than that. They were winning.

PSG only truly threatened close to half-time. In the 43rd minute, Nuno Mendes wins the duel on the left, gets to the byline and crosses. Hincapié clears, but the ball falls to Fabián Ruiz, who heads with intent. Shortly afterwards, Dembélé tries from distance, but without accuracy. Very little for a team that had so much of the ball.

The second half begins with the same pattern, but PSG increase the pressure even more.

And in the 62nd minute, finally, the moment that changes everything. A good combination down the left, Kvaratskhelia receives the ball and is brought down by Mosquera inside the area. Clear penalty. In the 65th minute, Dembélé steps up. One-on-one with Raya, he shows no nerves. Precise finish, level in the final. 1-1. And here the game opens up slightly, because Arsenal lose the comfort of the lead. PSG gain even more confidence and space. Arsenal try to respond, but they are no longer as emotionally protected.

In the 77th minute, almost the turnaround. Quick counter-attack, Kvaratskhelia drives forward, enters the box with little space left, shoots, the ball takes a deflection off Lewis-Skelly, hits the post and goes out. It was the closest moment to a winning goal in normal time.

Until the end, the game lived off moments. Raya produced a brilliant save to deny Barcola with a perfect piece of goalkeeping. Then, in stoppage time, Barcola once again found space in transition, but made the wrong decision.

Extra time was more tactical than entertaining. Fatigue, fear of making mistakes, both teams more concerned about not losing than about winning. PSG had more possession, Arsenal stayed deeper.

And in the end, everything was decided on penalties. Gabriel Magalhães missed his penalty, the fifth one, and PSG became Champions League winners. They secured back-to-back titles and lifted their second Champions League trophy.

Post-match

A very tactical final, where Arsenal executed their defensive game plan almost perfectly for a long period, but eventually gave way at the key moment. In the penalty shootout, PSG were more clinical and Gabriel Magalhães’ miss proved decisive.
PSG confirmed their status and won their second consecutive Champions League title.
