· 2 min readIn this Toulouse vs Lille match, I analyse the key tactical moments, individual performances and turning points of the game.
Toulouse came into the game with maximum energy and, for large parts of the match, looked like they had everything they needed to win. Lille, with Davide Ancelotti in charge, had more quality on paper, but on the pitch they spent a long time suffering.
Right at the start, Cásseres hit the crossbar with a long-range shot that would have been a fantastic goal, while Özer had to make two saves within a few seconds. The tempo was frantic and Toulouse quickly realized there was space to attack.
Lille had more of the ball, but did very little with it. They passed the ball between the center-backs, made little progress and had huge difficulties creating anything. Giroud, at 39 years old, was still doing a good job as a target man, receiving with his back to goal and releasing the ball quickly, but he was far too isolated.
On the other side, Toulouse kept creating chances. Hidalgo forced a great save from Özer, Russell-Rowe also came close and, from a corner, Hidalgo fired another powerful shot, but straight at the goalkeeper. Toulouse should already have been ahead. The statistics were almost absurd: 16 shots, eight on target and 2.06 xG compared to just 0.28 for Lille.
In the second half, the story did not change. Toulouse continued to be on top, reaching 70% possession, while Lille seemed increasingly interested in simply surviving. Giroud’s departure and Ayase Ueda’s introduction changed the way Lille attacked slightly, with the Japanese striker providing more pace when chasing balls played forward, but offensively Lille remained almost nonexistent.
And then came one of those things football does so often. In the 70th minute, Restes was injured and had to come off. Mathys Niflore, a goalkeeper only 19 years old, came on for his Ligue 1 debut. Three minutes later, he was picking the ball out of his net.
A low cross came into the box and Ueda tried to finish. Niflore seemed to have everything under control, but he couldn’t hold onto the ball, let it slip away and Ueda took advantage of the gift to tap it in. 0-1. A dream debut for the striker, an immediate nightmare for the young goalkeeper.
Toulouse then had the perfect opportunity to respond. Jørgensen was played through, saw the goalkeeper coming out and tried to chip him, but sent the ball over the bar. He cannot miss this. That had to be the equalizer.
From there, it was all Toulouse, but the ball simply refused to go in. By the 83rd minute, they already had 3.26 xG without a single goal. Jørgensen had another good opportunity late on, but chose to pass and lost the chance.
Post-match
Lille win 1-0 in one of those games where the result seems almost impossible to explain. Toulouse were clearly the better team, created much more and deserved to win, but missed everything they possibly could. Lille were practically nonexistent for long periods and ended up leaving with three points thanks to a goal gifted by the goalkeeper who had just come on.
